Barbara was my husband's 2nd Great-Grandmother.
She was born in Weiher, Pegnitz, Oberfranken, Bayern, Germany.
At the age of 17 she kept house for Georg Hopperdietzel and his son, Nicholas. When he asked her to marry him she said "NO", even though her parents thought she should. He was 25 years older than she was.
She decided to go with another couple to America. In 1874 they arrived in Manistee, Michigan. George came to America too, and when he asked her to marry him she agreed because she was penniless and glad to see him. They married in 1887 and their first child was born in 1882.
They left Michigan in 1884 and came to the town of Halsey (right out of Athens, WI). The Rietbrock Lumber Company was opening the land to the settlers. They chose a forty acre tract in the Town of Halsey to be near the Joseph Welbes family, who had moved from Michigan a year before. They later bought an eighty acre piece of land across the road from them. Clayton Gore now lives.
The boys worked in the woods and she managed to get the farm paid for. In 1922 Barbara, age 62, sold the farm to her son George and moved to Athens where she died at the age of 83.
Together they had five children:
