Luther Atkins was born in Lamar County, Alabama. He was the eldest of three children born to Johnnie and Minnie Lee Crossley Atkins. The family moved to Kilmichael, Mississippi when Luther was five years old where he attended a two teacher country school until he was in the eight grade. His parents then moved into town so he could attend high school.
He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Mississippi State University majoring in mathematics and science. He went on to the University of Alabama receiving his Master's Degree in 1950. Upon graduation from college he became principal of the Kilmichael High School in 1944 serving for ten years. He also served as mayor of the town for two terms (four years).
During this time he chose his life's partner and helpmate, the former Carolyn Applewhite of Kilmichael. To this union two children were born; a son, John, a concert pianist of New York City and a daughter, Mary Jane Atkins.
Then came his move to DeKalb in Kemper county, Mississippi, in 1944 where he served as Superintendent of DeKalb Special Consolidated School for nine years. Then in 1953, went to Forest Municipal Separate School District to serve for 23 years as superintendent.
