Ernest Van Patten, II's mother died of pneumonia when he was 19 days old. His father, a brother of Ernest Martin Van Patten, could not take care of him so (uncle) Ernest M. and (aunt) Morda S. Van Patten raised Ernest Martin Van Patten, II. Ernest Martin, MD always called himself Jr. (Myles Van Patten).
Dr. E. Martin VanPatten (1911-1968) graduated from the University of Iowa with an MD in 1938.

"Van Patten dies at 57"
"Dr. Martin Van Patten, 57, a lifelong resident of Fort Dodge, died at Lutheran Hospital Tuesday morning where he had been a medical patient since last Wednesday.
Private services are being planned to be held in Bruces Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Indian Mound Cemetery in Humboldt.
Surviving are his widow, the former Mary Jane Myles of Humboldt; two sons, Myles of Laramie, Wyo., and Charles of Ames.
Dr. Van Patten was born at Sergeant Bluff and came to Fort Dodge as an infant. He graduated from Grinnell College and the University of Iowa Medical School.
He was a member of the Webster County Medical Society, the Iowa State Medical Society and the American Academy of General Practitioners. Her served in the medical corps of the United States Air Force Search and Rescue division during World War II."
