Pennsylvania State Police. 04/12/89 -Cpl. Paul Almer died in a crash while piloting a Pennsylvania State Police chopper. He was searching the Susquehanna river with a Trooper Wayne D Bilheimer from Lancaster as an observer. They were looking for a reported jumper from the Norman Wood bridge. The bridge is just north of Big Bear island. The overhead power lines which he struck are located just north of the island, he died in the accident, the observer drowned. Paul was a pilot for the Pa. National guard and flew the huge chopper called a flying crane. He flew this crane in the same area for the PSP scuba team when they removed a small plane that crashed in the river.

Corporal Almer and Trooper Wayne Bilheimer were killed in a helicopter crash while searching for a body in the Susquehanna River in southern York County, Pennsylvania. Corporal Almer was piloting the aircraft when it struck high-voltage power lines at an altitude of approximately 90 feet. The helicopter crashed into approximately ten feet of water, with both officers trapped inside. Trooper Bilheimer had succumbed to multiple trauma injuries and Corporal Almer drowned. Both officers were found still strapped into their harnesses.

Corporal Almer had been with the agency for 14 years. Before joining the State Police he had been a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam for 18 months.


Corporal Almer was survived by his mother, Mrs. Anita Almer, of Bethlehem. She was presented with the State Police Cross. Corporal Almer was engaged to be married.
