William Noland Cassel was the son of Jacob G. and Jane Noland Cassel. He was born in Wayne County, Ohio and about 1855 his family moved to Clayton County, Iowa. His mother died and was buried there and the rest of the family soon after moved to Dunn County, Wisconsin. At the age of 17 he enlisted in Co. H, 21st Iowa Infantry and served during the Civil War until the close of the war. He married Clara Lee in 1878 and they had one daughter. Clara died in 1887.
In 1889 he married Rosana Fowler and with her they had four more children.
He died in 1919 in the National Soldiers' Home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was buried in Waubeek Cemetery.
His grave has a G.A.R. marker and when I visited in 2004 the stone was in good condition and had a flag placed on it.
His brother George is my husband's gr-gr-grandfather.
