Death: May 11, 2009, Iraq

Army Maj. Matthew P. Houseal, 54, of Amarillo, Texas; assigned to the 55th Medical Company, based in Indianapolis; died May 11 from injuries sustained in a shooting by a U.S. soldier at Camp Liberty, Iraq. Also killed were Army Spc. Jacob D. Barton, Army Sgt. Christian E. Bueno-Galdos, Navy Cmdr. Charles K. Springle and Army Pfc. Michael E. Yates Jr. He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents. Survivors include his wife, Dr. Luzma Houseal; seven children, Teresa, Catherine, David, Isabel, Patrick and Monica and Kelly Houseal, his parents, William and Helen Houseal; five brothers, Dr. Timothy Houseal and wife Leslie, U.S. Army Retired Lt. Col. Stephen Houseal and wife Julie, Joseph Houseal, Friar David Houseal, and John Houseal and wife Gail; three sisters, U.S. Air Force Col. Anne T. Houseal and husband Paul Houser, Elizabeth Nightingale, and Maria Johnston and husband Jeff, and 26 nieces and nephews. Dr. Houseal was among five people shot to death at military counseling clinic in Baghdad.
