Corp Rachael Lorraine Hugo
Birth: May 13, 1983
Madison
Dane County
Wisconsin, USA
Death: Oct. 5, 2007
Salah ad Din, Iraq

Serving her country and her fellow man was who Rachael was, it is what she chose to do. An exceptionally smart and talented girl, she learned the Russian language as an elementary student, the viola as a middle school student and went on to be an honor student in high school where she was a cheerleader. In her spare time she learned karate, gymnastics and jazz dancing. She also worked as a certified nursing assistant at Madison Meriter Hospital. After her 2001 graduation from Madison East High School, she continued working as a CNA and began studying for her bachelor's degree in nursing at Winona State University in Minnesota. She joined the United States Army Reserves and transfered to Viterbo College in La Crosse Wisconsin a year later, hoping to participate in the Reserve Officer Training Course there. She made the Dean's List with high honors. In September 2006, she was called to serve as a combat medic assigned to the 303rd Military Police Company, 97th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade, United States Army Reserve, based at Jackson, Michigan. She was insistant on going out on missions with her guys, even though she could have stayed behind. She felt they needed her there. With much admiration and respect, her guys called her "Combat Barbie". In Febuary 2007, she was awarded a commemorative coin for saving the life of a sergeant who was badly wounded by a roadside bomb. She carried this coin with her the rest of her tour. When she returned home in May 2007 for a family visit, she gave this coin to her father. While home on that leave, she often got in her car and just drove for miles, enjoying the freedom of driving down the road without the fear of a roadside bomb. She returned to Iraq on Memorial Day 2007. Rachael died of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked her unit using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. She was working on saving the lives of her fellow soldiers who were wounded by the roadside bomb. She was posthumously awarded the rank of corporal, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and a meritorious service medal. She is survived by her parents, Kermit Alan and Ruth Ann (Jensen) Hugo; brother, Scott (Jessica) Hugo; grandmother, Carol Hugo; and many aunts; uncles; cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Richard and Jeanette Jensen; paternal grandfather, Richard Hugo; paternal great-grandparents, Kermit and Lorraine Hanson; an uncle, Leon Jensen; aunt, Karen Turner; and cousin, Patty Turner. Rachael was originally placed in a wall crypt. On May 26, 2008, Memorial Day, she was moved from the crypt to a larger site on the cemetery grounds, with full military honors.
