James Grater was the first permanent settler near Ashwood when he arrived in the area around 1872, coming there from Iowa. At first, he raised cattle, but then switched to raising sheep. He married the widow of Columbus Friend, Martha, in 1880. James is buried outside of the iron fence of the Friend plot, right next to Martha, who is inside the fence. Some of the Friend family didn't like James.
