William Battersby died at 2 o'clock yesterday morning, January 15 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. P. McDonald, 865 W. Main Street at the advanced age of 98 years. Mr. Battersby had only been ill a few days and his extreme age was largely the cause of his death. He was born in county Trestmeathe, Ireland on June 9, 1798. and came to American in 1849, accompanied by his wife and four children. The family settled at Leroy, N. Y. where Mr. Batterby remained until 1887 when he came to Decatur to make his home with his daughter. Two daughters survive him. They are Mrs. P. McDonald of this city, and Mrs. Mary Driscoll of San Francisco. Mr. Batterby was a kindly genial old gentlemen and made many friends here during his short residence who will be pained to hear of his death. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock this afternoon from St. Patricks Catholic Church.
