Franklin John McVey was the son of Benjamin Franklin McVey and Phebe Adaline (Scudder) McVey. His father died on September 24, 1890, twelve days before Franklin's birth.

Franklin married Helen Melba Kimble on December 20, 1911, in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana. He was a farmer in the Lebanon area all his life. Their farm was across Highway 47 from this cemetery. Franklin and Helen raised two sons and one daughter.

Franklin's father is buried in the old section of the Anderson Cemetery in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. His mother, who married Willard P. Frazier some years after Benjamin Franklin's death, is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery near Kirklin, Clinton County, Indiana.
