Born in West Virginia to Rev. William Everett and Anna Louise (Rush) Henry. Herbert entered the Marines as a young man and later switched to the Army. Music was one of his great loves and he was a member of the military band in both branches of the service, playing the clarinet and saxophone and arranging music. He fulfilled a dream by becoming a U.S. Army Band Director serving in Texas, New Mexico, Washington, D.C. and overseas in both Italy and Germany.
