Birth: Sep. 2, 1816
South Carolina, USA
Death: Apr. 20, 1860
Indiana, USA

George William Duncan came to Indiana from South Carolina as a young man in 1835. He married Lovina Jane Elsberry in 1836. To this union were born eleven children, who all lived to adulthood. They owned a large tract of land surrounding their home, sometimes known as the "Duncan Settlement". He was a preacher, lawyer and doctor. He was County Representative to the State legislature one term. He was converted to Mormonism when early adherents of that faith were proselytizing in the area. He became an ordained minister and went with the Mormons to Nauvoo, Illinois and for some reason left and returned to Indiana forming his own religious sect called "The Saints" and is said to have ordained a number of preachers. The Church of the Saints thrived due to the zeal of George Duncan and even built a church building on the David Criss farm but disbanded after the death of Duncan. The church building then became the Pleasant Hill Methodist Episcopal Church. The Duncan Cemetery was donated by George William Duncan, being located on the southeast corner of his farm to be a family burial ground. He was the first person to be buried there.
