Mathematician. PhD, University of Gottingen, 1912 (Thesis: Uber das Waringsche Problem und einige Verallgemienerungen). University of Colorado at Boulder, Department of Mathematics from 1911 to 1949; chairman from 1944 to 1949. Kempner taught at Pamona College in 1950, then taught occassionally at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, the National Bureau of Standards in Boulder, and at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Kempner's major work was in number theory and algebra-with emphasis on the theory of polynomial equations. The Kempner Colloquium, an on-going series of regularly scheduled mathematics discussions sponsored by the University of Colorado at Boulder Department of Mathematics is named in Professor Kempner's honor and he held the inaugural talk in 1963.
