Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Ashford, Connecticut, he graduated from the US Military Academy in 1841, was commissioned an officer in the US Infantry serving in both the Seminole and Mexican wars. At the start of the Civil war, he was a Captain in command of Company D, 2nd Infantry at the U S arsenal, St. Louis, Missouri. He quickly organized the Missouri State Militia camp, armed the State Guard's units in an effort to stop the Confederacy from seizing the arsenal for Confederate Missouri troops. Promoted Brigadier General and given command over the Union troops in Missouri, he assumed command of the Army of the West in July, 1861. In August 1861, he joining forces with General Benjamin McCulloch and formed plans to attack the Confederates at Springfield. At the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, August 10, 1861, he became the first Union General to be killed in action of the Civil War. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
