NORMAL, May 24, 2004 -- Mrs. Rachel Adelia Barnes, 87, of 509 N. Adelaide St., Normal, died at 7:47 p.m. Saturday (May 22, 2004) at Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Normal.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, with the Rev. Spencer Gillespie officiating.
Interment will be in East Lawn Cemetery, Bloomington.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the memorial home.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Bloomington.
She was born Feb. 23, 1917, in Waverly, the daughter of Charles Edgar and Ella Loretta Keplinger Short.
She married Clinton W. Barnes on Oct. 23, 1940, in Waverly. He died Feb. 26, 2000.
She is survived by three daughters, Sheri (Glenn) Brownfield and Marjorie (Duane) Savage, both of Normal, and Beverly (James) Morrissey, Bloomington; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Bloomington.
She graduated from Wesleyan University, Bloomington, and the Brokaw School of Nursing, Normal.
She had formerly worked as a private duty nurse and had worked at Brokaw, Mennonite and St. Joseph Hospitals.
She was the supervisor of nursing at Brokaw Nursing Home for a number of years, and she had also worked for several area doctors.
During World War II, she had worked at hospitals across the United States. She was instrumental in administering the first polio vaccine to school-age children in McLean County.
