Enlisted 11 Dec 1861, age 42, from Watson, Allegan Co., MI. POW 6 April 1862 Shiloh, Tenn. Originally interred at Macon, Ga; reinterred at Andersonville after the war.

Enlisted 11 December 1861 at Watson, Allegan County, Michigan at 42 years of age; he resided in Watson Township, Allegan County prior to his enlistment; mustered in on 19 December 1861, Company F, Michigan 12th Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private; taken prisoner on 6 April 1862 at the Battle of Shiloh, Pittsburg Landing, Hardin County, Tennessee; confined on 15 April 1862 at Camp Oglethorpe, Macon, Macon-Bibb County, Georgia; mustered out 22 August 1862 dying of disease as a Prisoner of War at Camp Oglethorpe. (The Register of Deaths of Volunteers 1861-1865 records his Company as "H" and his age at death as 21 years, which may have been a confusion of an Alanson A. Austin, age 19 years at enlistment, who served in Company H, Michigan 22nd Volunteer Infantry.)
