Son of Benjamin (8/17/1804-5/23/1891) and Ann Mendenhall Armstrong, whose house was HQ for Union Generals Grant & Meade during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.
Brother of William C.(1829), Martha Ann (1835), Hannah (c.1840), Anna Maria (c.1845), Henry (c.1848).

Company E "Mercer Cavalry" of Spotsylvania County, 9th Virginia Cavalry, W.H.F. Lee's Brigade, Fitz. Lee's Division, Cavalry, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Spotsylvania County, VA.
Enlisted on 4/25/1861 at Fredericksburg, VA. for 12 months' service, he was mustered into Captain Corbin Crutchfield's Company, 9th Virginia Cavalry as a Private. This company was later designated Company E.
Absent, sick Nov & Dec 1861 Roll.
Reelisted 2/1/1862 for 2 years' service; $50 Reenlistment bounty due.
He deserted on 4/18/1862; left Virginia and lived in Wisconsin until after the war.

Postwar he returned to parents' home to help his mother and sister Maria. He then lived nearby with his wife in Screamersville (now Chancellor), Spotsylvania County before moving to Richmond.

The 9th Cavalry Regiment was formed in January, 1862, using the 1st Battalion Virginia Cavalry as its nucleus. Its companies were from the counties of Stafford, Caroline, Westmoreland, Lancaster, Essex, Spotsylvania, Lunenburg, King William, King George, and Richmond.
