Rosa Jane Daniel, daughter of George and Martha Stith Daniel was born in Mason County January 22, 1862 and departed this life on May 8, 1943 at her home in Kilbourne at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 10 days.
On May 27, 1881 she was united in marriage to Lorenzo Hughes and in this union was born eleven children, one having died in infancy and James passed away July 12, 1941.
She spent practically all her life in and near Kilbourne, having lived on a farm until her health became such that she could not carry on as she wished.
She was converted and baptised in 1909 by Rev. L.O. Layman and united with the Christian church and was a regular attendant as long as services were held at the Christian church.
For the last several years she has been almost an invalid, yet she carried on, and while her suffering was intense she never complained. She was a devoted wife and mother, living and caring for her fammily. It can well be said of her that she cared well for her own.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband and nine children, Mrs. Martha Cobb, Mrs. Anna Friend, Efner, Ross, Frank and Glen of Kilbourne, Mrs Bertha Davis of Havana, Mrs. Stella Riggins, South Bend, Indiana, and Ernest of Easton, Illinois. She is also survived by one brother, Charles Daniel of Peoria, 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Hughes celebrated their sixty-second wedding anniversary May 27, 1943.
Last services in her memory were held from the Baptist church in Kilbourne, Illinois on Tuesday, May 11, 1943 at 2:30 p.m., in charge of Rev. W. A. Osden. Three sacred songs were rendered during the services by Blanche Gregory, Addie Sears and Cecil Goben with Lulu Lane at the piano.
The floral offerings were cared for by Lena Lane, Margaret Bahl, Grayce Close, Mattie Tackman, Addie Bennett, May Williams, Alice Lane, Doris Friend, May Lane, Pearl D. Craggs, Parna Blakely, Jeanette Sutton, Addie Justice, Peachie Friend.
Casket bearers were: William Tackman, W. R. Close, Norman Bennett, C. L. Friend, Hal Ringland, Alva Craggs, H. A. Beckwith.
Interment was made in Kilbourne Cemetery with Niederer Memorial services in charge.
