Argentinian religious figure and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. A native of San Isidoro, near La Plata., he studied first at the Seminary of La Plata, then at the Pontifical Gregorian University, in Rome. He was ordained, on October 28, 1902, in Rome. He did various taks of pastoral work in the archdiocese of La Plata, from 1903 to 1918. He was elected titular bishop of Aulona and appointed auxiliary of La Plata, on November 8, 1918. Ten years after, he was named auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires, on May 15, 1928 and began to act a few weeks later as Vicar general of the archdiocese of Buenos Aires, and Military Vicar of Argentina. He promoted to the metropoliton see of Buenos Aires, on September 20, 1932. and elevated to the title of Primate of Argentina, on January 29, 1936. Pope Pius XI created him cardinal , on December 16, 1935. During the 1930s and 1940s, he was pontifical legate to various eucharistic congresses and episcopal meetings all across Latin America. He participated in the conclave of 1939. He resided in Roman curia after 1955 due to conflict between Peronist regime and Church. He resigned archbishopric and was appointed Chancellor of Holy Roman Church, on March 25, 1959. He participated in the conclaves of 1958 and 1963. He passed away in Rome.
