Son of Jennie Eldridge and George Washington Bawden moved to Davenport in 1895 with his parents and brother Albert Ralph, and attended Davenport schools.
He attended the University of Wisconsin @ Madison where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta social fraternity.
In 1912, he returned to Davenport to work with Albert in the rapidly-growing Davenport Postcard and Novelty Co in the Interurban Railroad ticket office on Brady St.
On 18 June 1918, Ray enlised in the army and served as sergeant in the Quartermaster Corps; first with Co 7 at Camp Meigs, Washington, DC, then with Co 11 163 Depot Brigade at Camp Dodge, (Des Moines), IA. After WWI, Albert, Ray and youngest bro Harry Eldridge decided to form Bawden Bros. Inc. on 3rd St. Ray served as office manager and bookkeeper.
He married Viola Katherine "Vi" Duvall on 16 Feb 1921 in her family home in Bennett, Madison, IA. She was born 7 Apr 1895 in Beardstown, Cass, IL dtr of John Frederick and Katherine Hansmeyer Duvall. Vi attended high school in Taylorville, Cass, IL and came to Davenport where she lived with family friends and was employed by Abraham's Ladies-Ready-to-Wear, a fairly new concept. Vi could smock and tat and was an excellent seamstress. She also played the piano in the Capitol Theater in downtown Davenport before the talkies and could still play well in her 60s.
Bawden Bros Inc. @ 121 E. 3rd St. developed into a photography studio and advertising agency whose ownership became generational.
They raised 2 sons: George Ray, Jr "Binc" b 7 Mar 1922 and John Duvall "Tim" b 23 Sept 1929. Both are deceased.
"Ray" died of a heart attack on the living room couch in the 161 Forest Rd home he built for Vi before they were married not then in Davenport city limits. At his death, he was president of Bawden Bros. The family were members of Davenport's First Presbyterian Church.
