Married Mary Elizabeth Bawden in her family home 1315 E. 11th St. (then 4th Ave) on 22 Mar 1900. She was dtr of Stephen Douglas and Mary Ella Woodward Bawden.
When Sam was 9 yo, he and his family moved to Mt. Carroll, Carroll, IL. Sam attended the Iowa State Normal School (now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, IA. Graduated from the Davenport Business College, worked as bookkeeper for Annie Wittenmyer Iowa Soldier's Orphans Home, later for A. J. Smith and Son furniture store and finally cashier at Union Savings Bank in Davenport.
Sam suffered from tb and spent several winter months in the South where he contracted typhoid. He died in the Bawden home just 2 mos after the death of their first son, Edward Weiland. Mary gave birth to a second son Stephen Lee b 2 Jan 1905 who died of cancer in Madison, Dane, WI after earning his Ph.D. from UW-Madison in philosophy and attaining asst professorship. He was cremated in Madison suburb Monona's Forest Home Cemetery in a lot owned by wife Bertha Montemayor Ely. Bertha still lives in Fairhope, AL widowed after 4 husbands (2008).
The Sam and Mary Elys were members of Davenport's St. John's Methodist Church.
