Born the oldest dtr of Stephen and Mary Terrill Bawden, immigrants from Redruth, Cornwall, England, who settled in Rockingham Township, Scott, IA in the summer of 1860. Stephen was president of Sawanee Mining Co., manufacturing mining equipment, and was in PA for the coal mining industry in full force. In 1860, Scott County mined 60,000 TONS of coal for trains and factories and that number would quadruple in 10 years.
Mary was 9 yo when she came to Rockingham.
After attending Davenport schools she married on 7 Feb 1871 John Lowery/Lowry Iles, son of Dr. Thos Jefferson and Maria Louisa Nuckol(l)s Iles. He was born 15 Sept 1848 in Midway, KY.
John was treasurer and mgr of Riverside Milling Co. at 804 E. Front St. (River Drive) until 1908 then president of Valley Place Investment Co. (his f-i-l real estate business). The family home was at 614 E. 13th St. (still exists) until 1917 when he moved to Magnolia Springs, Baldwin, AL where he died 17 Dec 1939 of nephritis. Mary cared for her mther and she died 6 Feb 1894 of paralysis. They were members of the Methodist Church.
They had 2 dtrs: Mary Louise b 25 Nov 1871 and Alice b 28 Mar 1876, d. 21 Feb 1881 of diphtheria.
