|Birth: ||Dec. 20, 1893|
|Death: ||Dec. 22, 1988|
Son of Edgar S. Bowers and Mary Elizabeth Kirk. Married Evangeline Leggett on June 12, 1918. Two sons: Ralph Kirk, Jr. born in 1925 and killed accidentally by an automobile in 1928 and Richard Keith, born 1930. Graduate of Mount Union College.
As an undergraduate at Mount Union College, Bowers joined a local fraternal organization called Agora that soon became a part of the National Phrenocon, now known as Phi Kappa Tau. Bowers became active in the fledgling national organization of five chapters and was elected National Secretary in 1917. He served for two years as a volunteer (during which time he also served in World War I) and was appointed to a full-time paid position in 1919. At first, he operated the office from his home in Ohio and then moved to rented space in downtown Indianapolis where he moved with his wife, Evangeline. Bowers worked for the fraternity until 1929 when its office moved to Oxford, Ohio. He attended 41 National Conventions between 1915 and 1985, a record which is unlikely to be matched. His later career was in government and military service, rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel during World War II.
His first wife died on Feb. 16, 1954. His second wife was Lucille Hubbard Bowers.
