Miss Alice Getz Among 22 Killed in Crash of Airliner Friday Night
Daughter of Former Metamora Man, Stewardess on Plane Carrying Carol Lombard and Mother
The shocking news of the TVA [sic] airliner disaster near Las Vagas , Nev., that came over the radio last Saturday morning came as a particularly severe blow to the family of Fred Getz of Mineral in the death of his daughter, Miss Alice Getz, stewardess on the airliner, and to the Misses Marguerite and Elma Getz of Metamora, cousins of the deceased. Mr. Getz is a former Metamoran and resided here until about thirty years ago.
Among the 22 killed, besides Miss Getz were Carol Lombard, the actress, wife of Clark Gable, her mother and her press agent, besides army men and the airliner crew. The crash came at aobut 7:30 Friday night shortly after the plane had taken off for Los Angeles from the Las Vegas airport and was due to its striking a mountain crag about 35 miles out of Las Vegas.
Alice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Getz, Mineral, had been an employe [sic] of the airline for three years. Her base was at Burbank, Calif., and she made her home in Glendale, Cal. She was graduated from nurses training at St. Luke's hospital, in Chicago, and since joining the airline as a hostess had been assigned to several flights. Her last flight assignment was on the Burbank - Kansas City run.
She was born in Kewanee Jan. 27, 1917 and made her home in Mineral all of her life, graduating from grade and high schools there.
Surviving besides her parents are two sisters, Marie, of Niles, Mich., and Mrs. Ruth Maxey, of St. Louis, Mo., and one brother, Fred, Jr.
Her parents were notified of the crash at 2 a.m. Saturday from the TWA headquarters at Kansas City, Mo.
Because of the difficulty in getting the bodies out of the almost inaccessible mountain region, no definite information could be obtained as to when the body of Miss Getz could be returned to her parents' home, but it was expected to arrive some time this week end.
Arrangements have been made to hold the funeral services in the Catholic church in Sheffield, which is the parish church of the family. Burial will be at Cullom, native home of Mrs. Getz.
Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Waldschmidt and the Misses Marguerite and Elma Getz visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Getz at Mineral Sunday. They are heart broken over the tragic accident.
The many friends of the family here sympathize with them. Mr. and Mrs. Getz after their marriage resided on a farm here until moving to Mineral.
