Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Became lieutenant colonel of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry. In May 1865 he led one of the parties pursuing fleeing Confederate President Jefferson Davis, being in on the capture May 10, 1865 near Irwinsville, Ga.
