*I want to personally thank everyone who visits our dear Elmer. He was very special, and was surely a character! You couldn't be sad around him - he just wouldn't allow it. He was handsome and was a bit of an ornery "rascal" in that he loved to laugh, and he loved it when others laughed with him. When he passed, he had a very thin mustache which made him look like an actor in an old Western movie. He just loved living life - regardless of the hand he had been dealt. We should all be so very blessed.*
Elmer Eugene Carter was a very special person. He had developmental delay and multiple medical problems, but that didn't slow him down. He was the absolute family favorite! Everyone cared for, and visited, Elmer - especially after he suffered the loss of his dear mother at a young age, and then the loss of his precious father later on in life.
When I was a child of about 7 or 8, I remember many times when I would accompany Elmer's father, Uncle Rob, to Elmer's group home for a visit. I would also send him little letters or cards with a couple of dollars tucked inside. I would save money from my allowance or lawn-mowing jobs, and set it aside just for Elmer - so he could have a couple of dollars to spend when his group went bowling or shopping at WalMart.
Elmer loved to receive visits from family members; and his loving aunts tried to visit him at his group home every Sunday afternoon! He absolutely loved to talk about cars (especially Mustangs) - though he would never even be allowed to drive one.
On his arrival at a family gathering, there would always be a murmur of "Elmer's here!" that would make its way through the crowd, and everyone would rush over to greet him and catch up on what was happening in his life.
He had another cousin who was in law enforcement; and to Elmer, that was the ultimate job! Somewhere along the line, Elmer was granted the rank of "sheriff"; and he loved every minute of his "job". He was given a pair of (locked) handcuffs which he very proudly attached to his wheelchair; and someone came up with a "badge" for him which he dearly loved to wear!
Elmer's loving aunts buried his "handcuffs" and "badge" with him; so he's probably still on the job up in Heaven! If any "bad guys" make it through the Pearly Gates, they'd better Watch Out! because Elmer's probably on patrol there, too!
You were the absolute best, Elmer! I love and miss you! Always and Forever,
**I'd like to offer a Special "Thank You" to my friend, Josey Wales, for editing the photos of Elmer. They look so much nicer! I can never thank you enough!**
