Dorothy Louise Keltgen was born on Nov. 16, 1916 in Minneapolis,MN. to Frank and Lenora Keltgen. In their family there were two older sisters,Marian and Gertrude and a brother,Bill
Dorothy met the Sisters of ST. Joseph when ST. Helna's parish opened; She began her 4th grade there. Upon completing 8th grade, she attened ST. Margaret's Acadeny.
Her mother died when she was fourteen years old, a sad loss for one so young.
In 1934 Dorothy came to the Novitiate of the Sisters of ST. Joseph, became ST.Gertrude Marie, and entered upon a long active history of service. She taught for forty-eight years as an elementary school teacher at ST. Mark's, ST. Luke's Nativity in ST. Paul; in Graceville, Waverly, Olivia, ST. PETER'S in Richfield, and in Atlanta,Georgia. On going a second time to Graceville, she found herself teaching the children of her former students. She was appreciated by her students, by parents and by fellow faculty members. When she had served long enough as an elementary school teacher, Getrude Marie found that ther were many community activities that could make use of her energy, She was there to help. Carondelet Center, the Provincial House, Project-One-Fifty and Bethany became very aware of her generosity and skills.
St. Gertrude Marie loved to travel. The beauity and historical value of Europe, the District of Columbia,Canada and Florida enriched her life.
ST. Gertrude Marie retired to Bethany in 1999. She continued to live her involved, cheerful, quiet life with her sisters here.
She died Wed. Jan. 11, 2006, She died a quiet, paceful death.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Helen and Nieces, nephews and cousins
Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the Provincial House Chapel, ST. Paul, MN.
Burial at the Resurrection Cemetery, ST. Paul,MN.
