Daughter of Martha V. and George W. Hardesty, whose business was the manufacture of hydrants in Orangeville. George was apparently skilled in several kinds of metalwork, having also worked as a brass finisher and a coppersmith. Orangeville was once a tiny crossroads hamlet on the outskirts of Baltimore on Philadelphia Road.
