John Henry Koppelman was the son of John Herman Koppelman (b. 1811, Hannover, Germany;d. 1877, Balt. Co., MD) and Anna Catherina Messmann Koppelman (b. 1803, Germany; d. 1884, Balt. Co., MD) Originally buried in the Koppelman Family cemetery on Franklin Ave. (later Frankford Ave.) near Radecke Avenue, his remains were moved to Baltimore Cemetery when his widow, Catharine Weber Koppelman, sold the family farm around 1920.
John and Catharine had ten children, and much loss. Their eldest, John Herman, named for his grandfather, left the family for the Klondike in 1898 and died there in 1905. Two died in infancy. They lost two more of their sons in young manhood: Henry Albert Koppelman died of typhoid fever caught in an Army training camp in 1898; William Ludwig died a terrible death by lockjaw at the age of 16, from a wound sustained on the farm.
The family belonged to Jerusalem Ev. Lutheran Church on Belair Road.
