Prospect-News, April 7, 1910:
Samuel Paxton Campbell died of grip and old age at the home of his son, the editor of the P-N, last Friday April 1, at 2:15 a.m.
Funeral from residence Saturday afternoon by Scott M. Holland of Gatewood, an old friend and Elder in Christian Church to which deceased belonged.
Buried at Oak Ridge. Pallbearers were 6 old soldiers, 4 ex-Union and 2 ex-Confederate.
Grandpa Campbell was a native of Tenn, age 85 years, 10 & 1/2 months old.
Leaves wife, born same year, had been married 67 years. Also leaves 3 daughters: Mrs. Malissa Beal, Biggers, Ark., Mrs. Elizabeth Crim, wife of Hon. L. Crim of Gatewood and Mrs. Martha Austin, Orange, Texas; 4 sons: William L. Campbell, McKinney, Texas, David L. Campbell and John P. Campbell, of Doniphan, and Samuel B. Campbell, Pomona, California. He joined Union Army at start of CW and served 4 years in Co. C, 6th Tenn Cav. Came to Mo 1871, settling in western part of Ripley County in 1873, moved to Doniphan 11 years ago. He was a farmer and blacksmith.
