Birth: Sep. 20, 1844
Tomhannock
Rensselaer County
New York, USA
Death: Oct. 26, 1908

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. At age 18 he enlisted in the 2nd New York Volunteer Cavalry, and was mustered in as a Private on August 14, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant at an unrecorded date, he was awarded the CMOH for his bravery on June 29, 1864 at Stony Creek Bridge, Virginia, with his citation reading "With a detachment of three men, tore up the bridge at Stony Creek, being the last man on the bridge and covering the retreat until he was shot down." He was captured by the Confederates during this action (the second time this happened to him during the war) and was held a prisoner until exchanged on August 13, 1864. A month after his release he was honorably mustered out in New York City, New York when his term of service expired on September 13, 1864. His Medal was issued to him on April 18, 1891. (bio by: Don Morfe)
