Charles A. Doyen "was graduated from the United States Naval Academy in the class of 1881. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1883, and afterward served in many seas and countries with both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1889, Captain in 1898, Major in 1900, Lieutenant-Colonel in 1905, Colonel in 1909, and Brigadier-General to date from March 26, 1917. As Major he commanded the Marines of the Atlantic Fleet in 1900; as Lieutenant-Colonel in 1905 he took command of the Marines in the Philippine Islands, and again as Colonel went to the Philippines in 1913, returning in 1915 to take command of the Marine Barracks at Washington, D.C. As Brigadier-General he was chosen to command the first brigade of Marines that was sent to France, and it was under his command that the Marines received the vigorous training that proved such a fine preparation for their later glorious exploits. But his health failed and on May 5, 1918, he was relieved of his command and ordered home. Soon after he returned he again became fit for duty and was ordered to take command of the Marine Barracks and Overseas Training Station at Quantico, Va. He died there of influenza in October 6, 1918. His career in the Corps was one of distinguished service, honoring the traditions of the American Marines." THE STORY OF THE UNITED STATES MARINES, 1740 - 1919 by John W. Leonard and Frederick F. Chitty, pp. 184-85.

Find a Grave member Mark Dutton (#46924199) noted that General Doyen received Navy Distinguished Service Medal #1 (posthumously), and also added other pertinent information to this memorial, as well as a color photograph of an oil painting of General Doyen. Note that the artist included the Navy Distinguished Medal.
