John Jasper applied for a Second Class Land Grant in Houston County, Texas, July 5, 1838 (ofc. # 2-86), for land in Montgomery County, Texas. Second Class Grants were issued to Citizens living in Texas after March 2, 1836, but prior to October 1, 1837. The Grant was issued November 3, 1845. A person had to live on the land for a minimum of three years to receive the grant.

John J. Crowson served under Col. Jos. L Bennett in the Somervell Campaign.Mustered into service the town of Montgomery October 1, 1842 in beat number 6 and served until January 1, 1843 when he was honorably discharged. John reenlisted for the Mexican-American War and is listed with his brother W. S. Crowson (John Cosson - W. S. Cosson) on the Muster Rolls of Texas Units of Veterans in the Mexican War. He served as a private in Middleton T. Johnson's Company. The Mexican-American War was an armed conflict between the United States and Mexico From 1846 to 1848. According to the "Daughters of Republic of Texas", John was killed in battle in March 1847, just four months before his daughter (Sarah Elizabeth Jane Crowson) was born.
