He was born to Robert and Edith Burns on October 31, 1929 in Port Huron, attended the Port Huron schools, and graduated from Port Huron High School in 1947.
Robert served with the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Sperry during the Korean Conflict.
He worked at the Grand Trunk Western Railroad before working at the GM Chevrolet plant in Flint for 30 years, retiring in the early 1990s. He was a member of the Carsonville VFW.
Robert is survived by two children, Robert G. Burns of Swartz Creek, and Caroline (Jeff) Patty of Hendersonville, TN; four stepchildren including a step-daughter, Gayle Dunsmore of Goodells; several grandchildren and step-grandchildren including a step-granddaughter, Melissa (Jason) Fletcher of Melvin; several great grandchildren & step-greatgrandchildren; three sisters, Fay Doherty of PortHuron, Barbara MacIntyre of Fort Gratiot, and Patricia (Herb) Booms of Jeddo; several nieces & nephews; and a special friend, Barbara Paris.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice in 2007 and a sister, Betty Cooper in 1972.
Services and burial took place on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 in Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Nashville, TN.
