Marine Cpl. Gonzalez was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron (MWSS)-273, Marine Wing Support Group (MWSG)-27, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina. Gonzalez was killed in a non-hostile accident when a commercial refueler collapsed at Logistics Supply Area Viper in southern Iraq. Armando, his father and two brothers escaped Cuba by raft in 1994 leaving behind other family members including his mother. The family settled in Florida and Armando learned English at Miami-Dade Community College. He joined the Marine Corps in August 2000. Armando and his wife, Liudmila, were expecting their first child and he was so excited about the prospects of being a father; he carried photographs of the sonogram with him and would show them to everyone.
