Robert Evo Bubeck
Birth: Apr. 2, 1955
Oakland
Alameda County
California, USA
Death: Sep. 24, 1981
Anaheim
Orange County
California, USA

At Age: 26 years, 5 months, 22 days

My brother was the son of Robert Evo Costa and Pansy Ann Kensler. Raised by Living Bubeck.

Robert took after mom's artistic talent. He was very good at drawing and took up a unique form of making pictures out of different strings and threads called String Art. He made some of the coolest and intricate designs inside of oatmeal and cereal boxes. He was also good at Track & Field. I think he was one of their fastest runners in high school. I know he was gifted with music and played the saxophone in band. That is why I had to try that instrument for a while and loved it.

I remember when he went to boot camp. I wrote him a bunch of letters and drew bunny rabbits all over the back of the envelopes. He wrote back to tell me to stop drawing those bunnies because he had to do a lot of push-ups for every one of them. That was so funny. Finally, I had my big brother at my mercy (big smile). You gave us lots of smiles, Robert.

One of my favorite memories of my brother was when he made his meatloaf. It cooked and smelled so good that day and we all looked forward to his meal. That is, until we tasted it. And found out that he used every spice in mom's spice rack to put in it. It was horrible! Then we all had to sneak to the bathroom, one by one, so he would not notice us flushing his meal away. No one wanted to hurt his feelings because he tried so hard to make a great meal for all of us.

Well, big brother, I did not get to tell you this but I will say it now: I know you improved on making that meatloaf, and I know that you kept trying on the operating table, too. Years ago I read about how you would not give up through it all. I knew when I saw you that last summer that you were not a quitter. I have lived with that knowledge for many years now… So, here it is, time and place, all that writing and research to learn about that horrible disease led me to what I needed to see about my brother… Maybe that is an important fact that I should never forget and others should know now as well.

It has also shown me that it is not always what you look for that is important. Way back when, we all wanted a kidney transplant. But, that was not an answer for Robert or Liz (our sister). The knowledge was not there to keep the disease from wasting a new kidney. The disease, a rare autosomal recessive kidney disease in which both parents must carry the gene, is called Oxalosis-Calcinosis. The odds for this occurring are up to 1 in a million and it happened twice in our family - my sister and my brother.

Looking back and moving forward, I see from this and the new family research why God had me on that journey with my brother and our sister. It is not about who or what you "think" you should find. It is all about what you learn and "need" to do with it along the way. Thanks for the smiles and lesson, big brother.
