Robert helicopter crew chief, and his crew had already finished their mission, and volunteered to save a 7-man Recon Team with a badly hurt member. Unable to land in the mountainous terrain, Robert was able to get the seven Marines out on a rig and with the seven Marines hanging underneath the helicopter, the helicopter crashed into a mountain in the dark and fog just 2 miles from their base. Robert and 14 of his fellow Marines were killed.

Born in Erie, he is the son of Robert and Leona Orr Donnell.

A 1967 graduate of Clymer Central School, he was formerly employed by the Clymer Bag Co. Sgt. Donnell, who enlisted in the Marine Corps on May 15, 1968, had been in Vietnam since August and had been a helicopter crew chief.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by five sisters, Roberta, Mary, Dorothy, Diane and Lis Donnell all at home; seven brothers, Gary, Samuel, Jeffrey, Thomas, Lysle, David and Timothy, all at home; his maternal grandmother, Mrs Hattie Orr, Waterford.

Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Spitzer Funeral Home in Clymer and will be announced pending arrival of the body from Vietnam.
