Maggie first married William (Bill) Thomas McBride on 02 January 1897. Bill was born in Missouri in 1874 and died of pneumonia in Taylor County, Texas, in May 1901. He was buried in Drummond Cemetery—the same cemetery where their infant son, Johnnie was buried in 1900. Bill's headstone is inscribed with an incorrect birth year of 1894. Also buried in Drummond Cemetery are Bill's cousins, Joe T and Sallie M McBride, also from Missouri. Bill was living with them at Round Mountain in 1895 when he knocked on Maggie's parents' door in Caps. He was looking for a lost steer. Maggie and Bill later married on the front porch of that home.
