Henry Everett Emerson was born on May 28, 1925, the son of Brigadier General Govenor Vincent Emerson, M.D. and Marie McLaughlin. He graduated with the Class of 1947 from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (Graduate # 16460) as an infantry officer.

Throughout his Army career, General Emerson saw multiple combat tours. During the Korean War, he served as a company commander with the 5th Regimental Combat Team. During the Vietnam War, he served as a brigade commander and conceived aerial reconnaissance and combat methods that were effectively employed against the enemy.

In 1968, while a colonel in Vietnam, he was twice awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC), the Army's second highest decoration for valor in combat.

Selected for general rank, General Emerson served as Assistant Division Commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, Commanding General of the 2nd Infantry Division, Commanding General of the John F. Kennedy Center for Military Assistance and Commanding General of the XVIII Airborne Corps. He retired in 1977 with the rank of lieutenant general.

In addition to his two DSCs, General Emerson was also awarded three Distinguished Service Medals, five Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Star Medals.

General Emerson died February 4, 2015.
