Professional Football Player. He was a Washington Redskins' linebacker for eight seasons in the 1980s, earning two Super Bowl rings. Raised in California, he attended California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) after gratuation from Santa Monica High School. He played on the Cal Poly Mustangs' 1980 NCAA Division II National Championship team, returning an interception 79 yards for a touchdown in the title game. In 1981, Kaufman made the Redskins' squad as an undrafted free agent. He went on to play for the Redskins' Super Bowl winning teams in 1983 and 1988. After injuries ended his career in 1988, he was the Redskins' scouting supervisor until 1998. He then became a mental health counsellor, and coached at Masada High School. He had recently returned to his alma mater as a linebackers' coach. Kaufman also worked as a supervisor for a moving company, and was a spokesman for the FBI and the DEA. He was named to the Cal Poly athletics Hall of Fame in 1993. In 91 NFL games, he made 18.5 sacks, seven interceptions, and two touchdowns.
