On December 24, 2012, as Lt. Michael Chiapperini, age 43, responded to a house fire, he was murdered by a gunman. The deranged gunman and arsonist had set fire to his own home and then laid in wait until firemen arrived and fired upon the responders, killing two and seriously injuring two others, along with a policeman.

Lt. Michael Chiapperini was a police lieutenant, a veteran firefighter, and had been named "Firefighter of the Year," in 2012. He will be remembered for his heroic and kind acts, such as his volunteerism following the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, in Long Island, New York.

Lt. Chiapperini is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son, who also worked with the fire department.
