Two Ceres Girls Are Drowned In Hughson Canal
Two 14 year old Ceres School girls drowned yesterday evening in Lateral No. 1 of the Turlock Irrigation District near Hughson after one slipped and draged the other into the water.
The body of Betty Jo Morris daughter of Rev. and Mrs. E.E. Morris of Ceres was recovered two hours later about a half mile from the point where she had fallen into the stream
Second Body Found
The body of Norma Jean Ferguson daughter of C. E. Ferguson of Ceres was recovered at 11:10 o'clock this morning about 50 feet from the spot were the two girls plunged from the canal bank.
The two girls who could not swim had been playing along the canal bank following completion of a day of fruit picking at the Valney Ranch. Swimming in the canal nearby were Albert Nanset 15, Modesto, Albert Hund 17, Hughson, and daughter of Al Dickerson of Tully road area Ceres.
The two youths attemped to save the girls but were unsuccessful.
Form Human Chain
Aided by Arnold Pierce and Ray Welch, both of Ceres and Garrett Barker, Philip Hawkins, Bill Chaimberlain, Lawerence Atwood, Clyde Eddings, Berland Baily, Ced Lewis, Elmer Whittle and J.W. Hamilton. the boys formed a human chain across the canal and combed it for the bodies.
Hamilton dived and recovered the Morris girl after her body was felt by the feet of one member of the chain.
The undertow of the canal at that point is considered extreamly dangerous.
In additon to her parents the Morris girl is survived by the five sisters, Florence, Helen, and Peggy Ann of Ceres and Mrs Al--? Peterson and Mrs Silvia Gillespie of Edmonds and two brothers Edward of Ceres and Macaen of Texas.
The Ferguson girl is survived by her parents, three brothers, Charles and Bobbie Ferguson of Modesto and Arval Ferguson of Oklahoma and two siters Mrs. H. K Carson and Mrs. Leroy Bumpas of Oklahoma.
