Birth: Jul. 2, 1820
Philadelphia County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Jul. 28, 1878
Multnomah County
Oregon, USA

George Law Curry was the last Territorial Governor of Oregon (1853, 1854-59) and also served in the Oregon Legislature (1848-49, 51-52), as Secretary of the Oregon Territory (1853-55) and as U.S. Senator from Oregon (1860). He was born on July 2, 1820 in Philadephia, PA and died on July 28, 1878 in Portland, OR. He came to the Oregon Territory in 1846 in a wagon train that included Alphonso Boone, grandson of Daniel Boone, and the famous Donner family, which opted to take a new, “shorter” route to California. The rest of the Donner story is well known. In Oregon, Curry was the third editor of the Oregon Spectator, a position he left after a year and a half because he said the goal of a politically neutral paper demanded by Governor Abernathy was impossible. Curry called his dismissal censorship of the press. Curry was married to Chloe Boone, the great-granddaughter of Daniel Boone and Alphonso’s eldest daughter. Curry County, on the Southern Oregon Coast, is named after him.
