Poet. He was an English literary most noted as the best poet of the Middle Ages. Educated at St. Paul’s Cathedral School, he became acquainted with the influential writing of Virgil and Ovid. During his lifetime as an author, his most acclaimed book work was “The Canterbury Tales”, a collection of stories and poems. Many of his books included “Romaunt of the Rose” (1370), “Saint Cecilia” (1373), “Anelida and Arcite” (1379), “Parlement of Foules” (1382) and “Troilus and Criseyde” (1385). In 1357, he became a public servant to Countess Elizabeth of Ulster and continued in that capacity with the British court throughout his lifetime. He also was made an esquire by King Edward III, fulfilled many diplomatic missions as a justice of the peace and later became a Parliament member. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
