The Legend of Stiffy Green:

The Heinl Mausoleum in the Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute housed a deceased dog. The bulldog belonged to a wealthy man named John Heinl in the 1920s.

A legend grew that he had been a noble dog who used to lie near his master's grave until he, too, had died. The man's family had the dog stuffed and put on display near the rich man's casket. The mausoleum became a favorite rendezvous for dating teenagers, who would shine flashlights through its glass doors to see the dog's glowing green eyes.

They called him "Stiffy Green".

When the dog sensed danger, he howled, so they said. He reportedly scared away thieves as well as the curious.

In the 1980s, the Terre Haute Lion's Club built a lifesize replica of the Heinl mausoleum inside the Vigo County Museum, and Stiffy was moved into it.

He has been there ever since.
