Caroline was the youngest of three daughters of Claude Antoine Bertier and Sarah (Sally) Bartram. (The tombstone has her father's name as Charles, in error)
Caroline's father was originally from Lorraine France and came to Philadephia in the 1780s to start a merchant business, as he was from a family of merchants. Claude died in September of 1793 in the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. Caroline was born five months later, so never knew her father.
Caroline's mother, Sarah, was from the Quaker Bartram family. Her father, Isaac Bartram was a druggist in Philadelphia and the son of John Bartram, the father of American Botany.
Caroline never married.
