Birth: 1815
Glen Cove
Nassau County
New York, USA
Death: 1851

Abraham Kershaw (1815-1851) most likely died in Colorado, on his way to California. (b. 1815, most likely Oyster Bay area, Nassau County, Long Island, New York, USA - d. around 1851 possibly in Colorado, on his way to California)

Ancestors:
Abraham's ancestors were from Holland and settled in the Oyster Bay area of Long Island and may have been married at the Reformed Dutch Church in Wolver Hollow, Nassau County.

Name:
The Kershaws of Wolver Hollow sometimes spell their name Cashow or Cassou.

Parents
Most likely Ram Cashow (1768-1816) and Maratye Bennet (1774-1830). He is sometimes referred to as Rem Cashow, but his tombstone uses "Ram". She is listed as "Mary Bennet" on her tombstone.

Baptism:
He most likely is the "Abraham Cashow" christened on February 13, 1814, in Wolver Hollow.

Marriage:
He married Sarah Oldrin (1816-1894) around 1834, possibly in the Wolver Hollow Dutch Reformed Church which served the Oyster Bay area.

By 1850 the family was living in Manhattan and they appear in the census.

Children:
By 1850 he was living in Manhattan with the following children: Mary Kershaw (1835-?); Israel Kershaw (1840-?); Anna Augusta Kershaw (1841-1931) who was born in Glen Cove and married Charles Frederick Lindauer (1836-1921); Sara Kershaw (1843-1922) who married Matthew Williamson (c1825-?) and after his death married William Young; Amy O. Kershaw (1847-?) and Peter Kershaw (1849-?). The family then moved to Somerville, New Jersey.

Somerville, New Jersey:
The move to New Jersey was shown by the bank records of Anna Kershaw and was confirmed by the marriage of her sister in Plainfield, New Jersey. One of the Lindauer grandchildren was also born in Plainfield, New Jersey.

Death:
He most likely died in Colorado, on his way to California.

Other Abraham Kershaws:
Our Abraham Kershaw (c1815-?) may be the same person as Abraham Cashow (1814-?), christened February 13, 1814, in Wolver Hollow, child of Rem Cashow (1768-?) and Maratye Bennet (1774-?). Abraham Kershaw (c1815-?) may proved not to be the same person as Abraham Kershaw of Somerville, New Jersey who owned a hotel there: "Andrew Emery Voorhees was born at Lamington, Somerset county, New Jersey, on the 4th of November, 1850. His parents resided on a farm until their son was ten years of age, and then they removed to North Branch, where they conducted a hotel, and it was there that our subject received his first experience in the management of a hostelry. Here he grew to manhood, attained a fair common-school education, and in 1874 he entered the employ of A. Kershaw, proprietor of a hotel at Somerville, New Jersey. In 1879 Mr. Kershaw took charge of the Mansion House, at Morristown, and brought with him Mr. Voorhees, who retained his connection with the Mansion House about two years, by which time he had established for himself a good name and had obtained a broad and practical experience in the hotel business, so that in 1881 he took charge of the United States Hotel and has since continued as its proprietor. He has met with more than ordinary success in this line of enterprise and his establishment has secured an excellent reputation and a liberal patronage."

Uncompleted tasks:
His death certificate needs to be found in Colorado, he died around 1851 possible on his way to California. Death certificates were not issued in Colorado until the period after his death. His birth and marriage record needs to be found.
