While residing in the Ninety-Six District, John volunteered on July 2, 1776 to serve with 2nd Lt. William Riley, 1st Lt. John Woods, Capt. Robert Anderson, Maj. Reed, Col. Pickens, and Gen. Williamson. He went to Fort Independence and remained three weeks. From there, he was dispatched to the frontier where he remained until mid-September or early October. He then went to Fort Seneca and remained until the last of February 1777 under Capt. Benjamin Tutt. In March, he served with 2nd Lt. William Harris, 1st Lt. James Baskin, Capt. Wm. Baskin (same major, colonel, and general as before) and was stationed at a blockhouse between the Saluda and Savannah Rivers where he remained for fourteen months. On February 14, 1778, his unit was defeated in a skirmish in Georgia. In August, he volunteered to serve in the same unit and marched against the Indians. After thirty-three days, he was discharged. On March 10, 1780, he joined Capt. Robert Anderson and marched to Beach Island where Pickens took over command. He served three months and fifteen days. Next, he was with Col. James McCall, Maj. John Cunningham and Col. Clarke of Georgia and was in the battle from October 14th to 18th, 1780 in which the Americans were defeated by British Tories and Indians near Augusta. Thereafter, he joined Capt. Maj. Parson on the North Pacolet and remained with him until springtime. He then joined Capt. William Baskin and remained with him until June. In June, he joined Capt. Robert Weathers, 1st Lt. Francis Carlisle, and 2nd Lt. John Caldwell as a spy. He served three months and then joined Capt. William Baskin, 1st Lt. John Files (his father), 2nd Lt. Benjamin Lawrence and served three months. Thereafter, he joined Capt. John Norwood for another three months, and the joined Capt. William Baskin again and remained with him until peace was declared. At some time, he was a commissary under Gen. Williamson.
