Professional Football Player, Author. A former NFL wide-receiver, he went on to write the bestselling novel "North Dallas Forty" (1973). It was adapted into a 1979 motion picture starring Nick Nolte and Mac Davis. Born Peter George Gent, he was a star basketball player at Bangor High School (Michigan) and continued his athletics at Michigan State University, where he led the Spartans in scoring three years consecutively while at the center and forward positions. Although selected by the Baltimore Bullets during the 1964 NBA Draft, he tried out for and earned a spot with the Dallas Cowboys, prior to the 1964 season. For five seasons (1964 to 1968), he played at the wide-receiver position in the National Football League with the Cowboys, appearing in 46 regular season games. Following his playing career, Gent drew from his experiences to write "North Dallas Forty", which depicted the unsavory side of the game. In addition, he penned the novel "The Franchise" (1983). (bio by: C.S.)
