US Congressman. He attended the Lyndon and the Randolph Academies in Vermont and graduated from Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester, Vermont. He taught school for several years before he moved to Lancaster, New Hampshire where he was admitted to the bar and established a law practice. In 1853 he made the decision to enter politics and was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives for the 1854 to 1856 session. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1860. His political and law career was interrupted by the Civil War while he served as a brigadier general in command of New Hampshire State Volunteers. Following the war he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth and Forty-first US Congress. He declined a nomination for a third term and resumed his law practice.
